I think I may welcome you
when you come to my door,
although I may not welcome
the road you take,
or the road you make me take
to reach there.
I understand the beauty of your brutal work though;
You end things
so new things can begin,
The world cannot run without you.
You are the harbinger of freedom,
liberating mortals from pain,
albeit yes,
You gift grief to the ones you leave behind.
Perhaps in the future, we will live longer,
Thousand instead of a hundred,
Million instead of a thousand,
but even for the immortals
Life is ultimately short.
Even the universe has to die at one point,
And when it does, does it think it happened all too soon?
Some would grieve when I would leave,
Some won’t even notice.
If by chance I am well known,
Perhaps I would be remembered more,
my identity, my life,
analysed, scandalized
interpreted, misinterpreted,
Perhaps I’d inspire, or called a liar,
but thankfully, regretfully,
I would be too dead to do anything.
And for that peace,
Death, I am grateful.
Perhaps it’s easy for me to say
when I am not dying right now,
perhaps it’s just a petty attempt to accept
that if I am born, I’d come to you,
I’d die, and I’d go
to wherever it takes to complete the circle.
So why should I be scared of you?
You are a part of me,
You are inevitable.

Very interesting take on death!👌
You have become Master of Death without the deathly hallows!😃
‘You gift grief to the ones you leave behind…’
I’ve always been more scared of death in this sense..of being left behind..
I recently came across a passage in a book that described it perfectly. The book was ‘A Man Called Ove’. Have you read it?
I’m also sometimes scared of what comes after death..is it really ‘peace’ after death? Do we know what happens to our consciousness after death? I hope it dies with our body..I find the idea of the consciousness floating in the universe – intact but not able to do anything – scary..if it evolves into something else entirely – that’s a different matter..
‘Matter’ – interesting choice of word! Is consciousness ‘matter’? If yes, then it will perish with our bodies!
It matters a great deal but can’t say for sure if it is ‘matter’! :p
You come up with deep thoughts on death, and I come up with silly comments on your deep thoughts on death!

These are not at all silly Ishi! These are pretty valid afterthoughts, and I completely get you. I need to read A man called Ove. I remember we talked about this earlier. (Maybe DV was reading it then?) Whether consciousness is matter or not we don’t know. It’s one of the central mystery that has been bugging philosophers since ages. If consciousness is matter, then where do we point it in our body? There is no brain part called consciousness. But we know it exists. Although what you know might be different from what I know – consciousness is subjective but I guess it’s objectively there. Is it the soul? Is it energy? Is it just a thought? I find the thought of consciousness floating in the space scary too. I like to believe in your next sentence – it evolves into something else. Maybe people are born as different beings at different time at different planets and that becomes the great consciousness – the consciousness of the Universe. I know this sounds a lot of like Brahman. To be honest, I like that idea. I like the idea of Universe observing itself through us. What do I mean by us though? Just humans? Or all the beings? If all the beings, then are the other beings conscious too? In some way? Do the trees know they are trees? Anyway, these questions can never be answered. Coming back to the ‘matter’ of the death – I like the thought that it could be the absolute end for us too (but is it? Our actions might have repercussions for ages and in that case are we in some way alive as long as our thoughts, ideas, actions can influence the world even after we are dead? Does Van Gogh know how respected he is now!?) Maybe we are not reincarnated after all. Maybe we die and that’s it. But then how would you explain the karmic baggage? The inequality in the luck of birth? How do you explain luck? Is it just all randomness? If it is, then this randomness is scary because it may imply that we have no moral duties. Ah, all these questions have no answers but you and I can only wonder… and find it in ourselves the courage to accept our end.
